چکیده

The authors argue for a generalisation of inference f rom the standard account in terms of truth preservation to one which coun tenances p r e s e r v a t i o n o f o the r desirable metalinguistic properties. The development is partly historical and partly a n a l y t i c . A r e l a t i o n a l a c c o u n t o f preservation is then presented and from this the two notions of inferential structure and in ferent ia l model are der ived. To il lustrate the generality of the relational conception of inference, we show how such structures and models can be realised in the development of a legal advisory

Informal Inferential Reasoning Using a Modelling Approach within a Computer-Based Simulation

The article investigates how 14to 15year-olds build informal conceptions of inferential statistics as they engage in a modelling process and build their own computer simulations with dynamic statistical software. This study proposes four primary phases of informal inferential reasoning for the students in the statistical modeling and simulation process. Findings show shifts in the conceptual st...

A Tractable Class of σ-stable Poisson-Kingman Processes and an Effective Marginalized Sampler

We explore the use of a class of random probability measures, which we refer to as the Q class, for Bayesian nonparametric mixture modeling. This class of processes encompasses both the normalised generalised gamma and the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet processes allowing us to comparatively study the inferential advantages of these two processes. We propose novel marginal and conditional char...

Bayesian Inference for α-Stable Mixtures

The Gaussian model results unsatisfactory and reveals difficulties in fitting data with skewness, heavy tails and multimodality. The use of α-stable distributions allows for modelling skewness and heavy tails but gives rise to inferential problems related to the estimation of the parameters of the distributions. The aim of this work is to generalise the stable distribution framework by introduc...

Bayesian Inference for Mixtures of Stable Distributions

ABSTRACT. In many different fields such as hydrology, telecommunications, physics of condensed matter and finance, the gaussian model results unsatisfactory and reveals difficulties in fitting data with skewness, heavy tails and multimodality. The use of stable distributions allows for modelling skewness and heavy tails but gives rise to inferential problems related to the estimation of the sta...

Modelling the formation of Ozone in the air by using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) (Case study: city of Yazd, Iran)

The impact of air pollution and environmental issues on public health is one of the main topics studied in manycities around the world. Ozone is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global climate. This study was conducted topredict and model ozone of Yazd in the lower atmosphere by an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). Allthe data were extracted from 721 samples collected daily ove...
